In this exhibition, Bart Spitaels and Elke Van Kerckvoorde mirror each other’s fun with figures. Spitaels is all about clear-cut lines, presenting drawings he made of previous residencies, all of which attest to his taste for intensely pigmented colour swatches on conservation cardboard. A contemplative series which showcases an abstract back-and-forth between blossoming architecture, machinery and floral motives that never cease to fascinate.
With ‘Serie C.R.’, Van Kerckvoorde dedicates a vivid homage to her deceased mother, a graphic designer herself. In the paintings, a lively circle and symbolical cross make for a playful interaction between geometrics in which combinations appear endless. At the same time, these compositions stand alongside concrete building blocks sets: just as colourful, but the sculptures will, in time, be tainted with impact and go on to lead their own lives. This dynamic dyad takes Galerie Rufus to unknown heights, courtesy of ‘punt lijn vlak’ and its power to transcend time.
